WHEAT THINS GO STALE

On the names of Indie bands and their evolution

Well, just as there are trends in the sound and styling of music within the indie subculture, there are also unmistakable patterns in the names of indie bands.

Unlike in other genres, it has always been uncommon for indie bands to use the band name template that is: “The” followed by a noun of some sort. Ex: The Beatles
Indie bands usually prefer to skip the article and jump right into their super clever titles.
Though there are exceptions like: The Strokes, or The Kooks
Most of which tend to fall toward the indie rock/alternative rock side of the spectrum

Now if we look a couple of years back (around the early to mid 2000s) to observe the names of some popular indie bands, we might see this odd trend of animal themed band names. Ex: Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, Panda Bear, Deerhunter, Fleet Foxes, Dr.Dog, etc.

But recently, it seems like the indie world has made a sharp turn towards the east coast. With all this new lo-fi, shoegaze, dream pop crap comes a flood of beach themed indie band names. Ex: Beach House, Best Coast, Wavves, Beach Fossils, etc.. Not to mention, they all sounds exactly the same

Anyway, all of this just further exemplifies how cutting edge and creative indie music is, always coming up with new sounds and interesting names. Every new band has some fresh idea to contribute. ITS ALL SO EXCITING AND ORIGINAL!!
Hope it doesn’t all get drowned out by this new dubstep craze.
